Study Questions

Questions for Personal Reflection
  1. Read Proverbs 18:21. What makes the tongue so powerful and deadly in some situations and so comforting and helpful in others? Words can destroy or build up. How are your words impacting your marriage, family, friendships, church, career, hopes, reputations, etc.
  2. Matthew 12:34 says “out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.” What is your heart overflowing with? Bitterness? Joy? Gratitude? Contempt? Spend some time thinking about how your heart determines what comes out of your mouth.
  3. In what circumstances are you likely to tell untruths or distort the truth? What heart condition do you think is leading you to lie? Why is truthfulness so important to God? Confess your lies to God and to those to whom you have lied. Make things right.
  4. Ask the Spirit to bring to your mind three specific people in your life who could use words of life and restoration. Pray for the Holy Spirit to make you aware of your deceptive or destructive words this week and aware of opportunities to put in a good word. Follow the Spirit’s lead.
