Study Questions

  1. What do people around you most worry about? What are some of the negative effects of worry?
  2. Read Matthew 6: 25-34. What questions of your own pop up when your read the worries mentioned in this passage? Why do you think Jesus asks so many questions? What does Jesus suggest as an antidote to worry? Read Luke 8: 11-15. What happens to the seed in verse 14?
  3. Read Jeremiah 17:5-8. What are the two types of trees Jeremiah describes? How are they different? What kind of fruit do they produce? Which tree are you most like?
  4. Satan continually attacks the unguarded, anxious mind. What anxious thoughts are you most prone to entertain? Examples: Misjudging people’s thoughts and motives concerning you | Catastrophizing situations | Assuming worst possible outcomes | Assigning negative traits to others | Dismissing positives |Dwelling on the negatives | All or nothing thinking | Blaming others and deflecting personal responsibility | Asking “what ifs” | Letting strong emotions distort reality. *
  5. Read Philippians 4:4-9. What practical guidance does this passage provide for overcoming worry? What does it practically look like to guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus? 
  6. Choose a verse to memorize to help you when you begin to feel anxious. John 1:27, Colossians 3:15, Philippians 4:6-7, 1 Peter 5:7, John 14:27.
