Study Questions

  1. How did you find out about Jesus? Was there a person who was influential? What about them made them influential?
  2. In Matthew 5:13-16, Jesus calls us to be salt and light in the world. How does this change the way you live your life among people who don’t know Jesus? How is a Christian who doesn’t live out the values of the kingdom like unsalty salt or light that doesn’t shine?
  3. Read Ephesians 5:6-21. What might cause us to lose our distinctiveness in our culture (lose our saltiness, cover our light)? Why are these warnings about our dark world necessary for Christians? How do we keep our distinctiveness from the world but still engage with people about life in Jesus?
  4. Read Colossians 4:2-6. How might God open the door for you to salt or light this week? How might “acting wisely with outsiders” change what you say or do this week?
  5. As you think of the people you will be interacting with in the coming week, who specifically might be ready to consider Jesus? Plan to spend some time this week in solitude and pray for God to give you inspiration for how to best point them to Jesus.
  6. How can imperfect people like us hold up Jesus to our world? Why are humility and dependence on God’s Holy Spirit so important?
  7. As you strive to live an influential life, are you prepared for opposition? What might help you remain steadfast?

Apply It!

Challenge //

How would our connection with God change if we actually sought out His voice and listened? This week try and practice times of Solitude. Create space daily to seek out and hear God’s voice. Ask God to reveal to you how you can be the salt and the light for those in your context. What is He saying to you? What actions does He want you to take? How can you be the salt and the light? After your times of solitude, make note of what God is revealing to you about being His salt and light. Use these times of solitude to connect with God and make lasting changes.
