Study Questions

  1. When have you seen a conflict escalate because of bad reactions? When have you seen a conflict avoid or even healed because a person responded wisely?
  2. ReadMatthew 5:38-48. When are you most apt to react in anger? Why? What is the most challenging part of this passage to you?
  3. ReadRomans 2: 1-11. What does Paul teach about human judgment and retribution? Why are we so prone to the hypocrisy described in these verses? What is the purpose of God’s patience and kindness? What is the difference between our culture’s view of tolerance and God’s forbearance, patience, wisdom?
  4. Read1 Peter 2:23. What was Jesus’ response to injustice? How far was Jesus willing to suffer? What does it look like to entrust ourselves to God in the face of justice? What is expected of us today?
  5. ReadRomans 12:14-21. Consider any adversarial relationships you may have (i.e. an estranged family member, co-worker, friend, or neighbor.) How have you sinned in your response to their mistreatment of you? What are some practical ways you can you love your enemies with the hope of turning them from their sin and into a friend?
  6. What are some reasons it is so important for Christians to show love in the face of injustice? When have you seen this kind of love change a relationship for the better?


Apply It!

Reflection: 


1. Ask God to soften your heart and help you see your enemies through His eyes.
2. Ask God to soften your enemy's heart and to see themselves through God's eyes.
3. Die to self daily, choosing redemptive words and deeds over fleshly reactions.
4. Walk by faith, not by sight. Embrace goodness and show kindness even when there aren’t immediate results.
5. Embrace suffering as an inevitable, but momentary reality, even as you wait for God's perfect justice.
6. Preach the way of Christ and be ready to welcome your enemies as brothers and sisters in Christ should they come to repentance.
7. Be a peacemaker. Leverage your influence for goodness and kindness, mercy and justice. Get involved even when it's tough.
